What to Expect: Living with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Temperament & Personality

Cavaliers are affectionate, gentle, and eager to please. They thrive on human companionship and don't do well when left alone for long periods. Expect your Cavalier to want to be by your side constantly – they're true lap dogs who love cuddles and attention. They get along wonderfully with children, other dogs, and even cats.

Exercise Needs

While they're not high-energy dogs, Cavaliers do need daily exercise. Plan for 30-60 minutes of activity each day, which can include walks, playtime, or interactive games. They enjoy outdoor activities but are equally happy curling up on the couch. Their adaptable nature makes them suitable for both active and more relaxed lifestyles.

Health Considerations

Cavaliers are generally healthy but can be prone to certain conditions including heart issues (mitral valve disease), eye problems, and hip dysplasia. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential. With proper care, health testing of breeding stock, and awareness of breed-specific issues, Cavaliers typically live 9-14 years. Annual cardiac and eye exams are recommended.

Living Environment

Cavaliers adapt well to various living situations, from apartments to large homes with yards. They're indoor dogs and should not be kept outside. They're sensitive to extreme temperatures and prefer moderate climates. A securely fenced yard is ideal but not essential as long as they receive regular walks and supervised outdoor time.

Time Commitment

Beyond daily exercise and grooming, Cavaliers need significant time for companionship. They can develop separation anxiety if left alone too long. Plan to spend quality time training, playing, and simply being with your Cavalier. They're best suited for families where someone is home most of the day or can take the dog to work.

Financial Commitment

Budget for annual veterinary care ($500-1000+), high-quality food ($400-600/year), grooming supplies or professional grooming ($300-800/year), and potential emergency medical care. Pet insurance is highly recommended. Also consider costs for training classes, boarding or pet sitting when traveling, and toys/supplies.
